Day of the Dead, or Dia De Los Muertos in Spanish, is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create offerings, or ofrendas, to honor their family members who have passed on the next plane.
These altars are decorated with yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and their favorite foods and drinks. These alter offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations.
The Day of the Dead is a rare holiday which celebrates both life and death on the same days. It is unlike any other holiday in that mourning is exchanged for jubilation.
